PASSENGER PICKUP: VOENIX RISING

Meet Mark of Voenix Rising. Mark has been blogging for over 5 years and started his blog when he was living in Phoenix. He now lives (reluctantly and has yet to love) in Denver with his partner, Ben. I've been following Mark since before he met Ben and have enjoyed following his life, his work in IT, his views on politics, religion, drivers, Microsoft and stupid office workers who still have no clue how to operate a computer. He longs to be an architect, is a talented photographer, drive a mini and has great taste in men (aside from Ben) which are not always safe for work but are always hot and furry. So pay Mark a visit and tell him Sean dropped you off. You'll be glad you did.

In his own words:
You're a bad man. You're a very bad man.
Irreverent, independent, and often snarky partnered gay boomer who is tired of moral pontification by hypocritical conservative assholes and hate filled religious bigots.
This blog is intended for adults only. It may contain unapologetically liberal diatribes and photos of naked men, either alone or together, doing things that may cause inexplicable erections among certain sanctimonious anti-gay Republican congressmen.

UPDATE 5.03

It's been a while since I've updated about my mom and myself. I've been really exhausted this week and sleeping a lot as things have caught up with me.

Today marks one month since mom came home from the hospital. We never thought we'd be here but mom had other plans. While in the hospital she coded twice and we were told she wouldn't survive that night after coding. Then twice we made arrangements for end of life including contacting the funeral home (that was Easter week). We were told her heart would give out off the breathing assist machines (she's been off them for one month) she's also been all but off oxygen too for the past week.

We the doctors wrong? Yes, but they were also hopeful and they (and all the nurses and aids and other staff) worked as if this would be the out come and not death.

We don't leave mom alone. She lost so much strength that she can only move her arms and legs but can't support her weight. She sits in the recliner every day and does her exercises when she can. Oh, she started physical therapy and is working towards being able to get in and out of bed on her own and maybe even walking.

The one set back she's had is a UTI (urinary track infection) which has (and does) caused confusion. She's been a bit lost in time and talks about my sister's wedding. The antibiotics seem to be helping but it can take as many as 10 days to clear up the confusion. We have started giving her cranberry pills as her cousin suggested.

Nights are the worst. It seems that for older people and especially older, sick people it is all but impossible to sleep through the night comfortably - even with medications. For my mom, this has meant typically waking every hour thinking she has to go to the bathroom. This means I have to be awake or awakened then remind her that she can't actually use the bathroom but must use the bedpan. She never likes hearing this. I also have to remind her sometimes that she has a foley and doesn't need to pee. Then, I have to get her on the pan which means undoing all the sheets and pillows that were arranged to make her comfortable and to prevent bedsores. Nine times out of ten, she doesn't go, it's been an urge rather than a need and there is now a mental component making her feel like she has to go. Regardless of whether she goes or not and whether there is evidence in the bedpan or not, I need to check and clean her as if she did go. NO son wants to do this for his mother and NO mother wants her son to have to do this for her.

We have tried various medications and strengths but she fights through it. For me this means I get almost no sleep during my watch from 9pm until 6-7 am or to really watch tv. We either play music or watch very calm, quiet shows. No Bates Motel, Hannibal, or Rupaul! My sister-in-law, Sue, takes over around 7 am and the aid comes at 8.30 am - 12.30. Sue spends the day with her until 9pm (there is of course some overlap) - she is incredible and I'm so thankful to have her. I try to sleep but there is cleaning and there are errands to be done. Dad spends time with mom but compassion and caring for the sick are not in his skill set and the stress had been very hard on him too. He's 80 and in good shape but now he needs more attention, with him it is more mental.

I do need to find some balance and time where I can do something besides eat but that has never been one of my strengths. The balance not the eating.

Thanks for all the emails and comments. It helps more than you know and more that I've been able to adequately respond to.

WET MEN

YES? NO? I DON'T KNOW!: IRON MAN 3

ARE YOU PLANNING TO
SEE IRONMAN 3?

TMI ANSWERS: ARE YOU AN ATHLETE OR AN ATHLETIC SUPPORTER?

ARE YOU AN ATHLETE OR AN ATHLETIC SUPPORTER?

1. Do you workout? For what reason?
I've never worked out in a gym. I'm more activity driven - mostly biking, some running and until recently lots of tennis. I did it mostly for enjoyment but also for the added benefits of stress relief and weight control.
2. What sports have you played? Any currently?
Growing up I never thought of myself as an athlete but one day while on a hike with some friends in grad school, Augie, complimented me on what a jock I was!
Although I sucked and wasn't interested (there may be a correlation here) in team sports, I did very well or even excelled in tennis, biking, running, hiking, skiing (water and snow - black diamond) and bowling (201 average). Currently I bike, walk and am trying to get back into tennis.

3. Were you on any school teams?
Yes. I was actually MVP of my high school bowling team and almost got beat up because of it. The day after the awards breakfast a group of the "jocks" asked me why I wasn't there to receive my award and thought that was disrespectful! I told them I didn't need to receive an award in front of them for it to mean something especially when they had made fun of me for it all year. They didn't like my attitude but one guy (David) finally understood and told the others to drop it and go.
4. Do you have any major sports achievements?
I won several NY/NJ/CY area junior bowling titles and two GLTA (Gay Lesbian Tennis Alliance) titles but my biggest athletic achievement was completing 5 AIDS RIDES.
My first ride was Philly to DC - 250 miles in 3 days and ALL hills! Three months later and not being on a bike since finishing the Philly-DC Ride I did the Boston to New York Ride at my friend's request to join him - 400 miles in 4 days and one of those days was in the remnants of a hurricane. Then I completed 3 DC Rides which were from Raleigh, NC to DC - 350 miles in 4 days. The DC rides were all in late June with high heat and humidity. I raised over $20,000 for the 5 rides. (One day I'll do a post after I digitize the photos)
5. Are there any sports you like to watch? Why?
I love to watch tennis - women's more so. The Olympics of course and then the Superbowl (does it count if you only watch it for the commercials and halftime show?)
6. Which sport has the best uniforms?
I think Rugby and Wrestling uniforms best compliment the bodies of the athletes but it's Rugby players that have the bodies I'm most attracted to. WOOF! Wait, what was the question?
7. Do you have a sports themed sexual fantasy?
I've had a few and lived out one but then as you know, I have a rich fantasy life.
8. Who is your athletic crush?
Ben Cohen - looks, brains, personality and character.

BONUS
Jocks - function or fetish?
This kinda turned out to be one of the more boring bonus questions. Sorry. Like most so far, my answer is both. It's not a fetish so much for me but I do have a small collection I've accumulated, mostly as gifts from those who do, because I'm very happy to indulge a man and his fetish.

CYNDI LAUPER'S KINKY BOOTS GET 13 TONY NOMINATIONS!

YEAH! CYNDI! OUR FRIEND AND ALLY!!
The 2013 Tony Award nominees were announced in NYC yesterday at a press conference hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sutton Foster. Topping the list with 13 nominations is the Cyndi Lauper-scored Kinky Boots.

"Kinky Boots" is based on the 2005 British movie about a real-life shoe factory that struggles until it finds new life in fetish footwear. Lauper’s songs and a story by Harvey Fierstein have made it a crowd-pleaser. It's airing this month on both Showtime and The Movie Channel.

Even before a tryout run in Chicago a remix of a number from the show, “Sex Is in the Heel,” made the Top 10 on the Billboard club charts, the first Broadway tune to do so in 25 years. Listen below!

Check out Cyndi's website for details of her SHE'S SO UNUSUAL TOUR celebrating the 30th (OMFG!) Anniversary of the release of her debut album. I saw her at Jones Beach that first year and 8 more times after that. I even had first row, center seats for the first True Colors Tour and have been lucky enough to have her grab my hand twice when she's gone into the audience! I hope to see her on this tour too!
